The Infant Request

Lyrics

For just before the fatal hour,
In which cold death did nip the flower,
He begged me —and it makes me weep —
To sing my little one to sleep.

The flower budded, hope was strong,
But hope could not its life prolong;
For soon, too soon, alas! I’m made
To see it blossom but to fade.
